Itinerary for Kolkata X Durga Puja Photography Tour

Arrival - Day 0

  • Arrival in India: Everyone can reach during the day time and rest at the nice hotel in central Kolkata near the Park Street area of Kolkata till dinner.
  • Dinner: Meet fellow photographers and receive an orientation briefing by Shivam.

Day 1

  • Begin early to witness the arrival of fresh flowers and capture the vibrant atmosphere of one of India's largest flower markets. The market's frenzy offers a challenging yet rewarding photography opportunity. The nearby Hooghly River adds picturesque moments and insights into the rituals and traditions.
  • Explore the older part of the city, known as old Calcutta, which showcases a rich blend of tradition and culture. Wander through the labyrinthine lanes, documenting the captivating juxtaposition of the old and the new.

Day 2

  • Morning visit to the outdoor wrestling hall near the Howrah Bridge where Howrah Bridge itself becomes the best backdrop.
  • In the evening, visit Kalighat and the renowned Kali temple to experience the spiritual ambiance and witness the rituals.

Day 3

  • Streets of Burrabazar Area, Metal market, vibes of fruit market will give you a perfect opportunity to capture the essence of amazing labours in these areas.
  • Kumortuli, the bustling neighbourhood where artisans are working diligently to complete the clay idols for the festival.

Day 4

  • Early Morning Rituals: Witness the start of the day's rituals at the river, capturing the spiritual activities and devotion and Observing the puja (worship) ceremony Raj Bari, gaining an intimate insight into their traditions and customs.
  • Explore the modern southern part of the city, which boasts stunning Art Deco architecture and unique renditions of the neighbourhood. Experience the vibrant adda culture against the backdrop of the festival and architectural marvels. Visit some of Kolkata's famous Pandals located in the southern neighbourhoods.

Day 5

  • We start late in the evening to embark on a journey to various Pandals (temporary shrines), each offering exquisite and sometimes quirky creations. Immerse yourself in the artistic brilliance and vibrant energy of the festival. On this day we will do our photo tour till late night hence we are keeping only the evening session for this day and next day.

Day 6

  • Witness the peak of religious and ritual fervour as Ashtami marks the beginning of the end of the Durga Puja. Attend a traditional Durga Arati, where you will be mesmerised with the colours of the butter lamps.

Day 7

  • Check-Out: Guests have their rooms until the checkout time. If you wish to extend your stay, please inform us in advance.

  • Arrival and departure airport transfers in Kolkata.
  • Orientation Dinner, mineral water availability everytime, local snacks.
  • Mini-bus/ Van transport in Kolkata or private car.
  • Photography mentoring/guidance in street, documentary and travel photography by Shivam.
  • Local assistant/guide/fixer in Kolkata.

Tour Exclusions

  • Comprehensive travel insurance. All participants are required to take comprehensive travel insurance for this tour.
  • Flight to Kolkata.
  • Entry visa to India (around USD$25 for an eVisa if you're an Australian).
  • Photographic equipment. You will need to bring/supply your own cameras, lenses, batteries, filters, memory cards and so on. A tripod is not as such required for this tour but if you love to use them, you can bring them.
  • Insurance for your photographic equipment while on tour.
  • Travel vaccinations.
  • Alcoholic drinks.
  • All personal expenses and fees, including laundry, medication, incidental meals and snacks, minibar etc.
  • Any transport and fees outside of the tour itinerary.
  • An India sim card is available for AUD$25, which can be purchased on your behalf. Please advise when making a reservation if you would like to take up this option. The local sim card will allow you to connect to the Internet and make voice/video calls over IP. The card offers around 2GB of mobile data usage per day.
